New research has suggested that players missing penalties is due to them overthinking the situation. The research from the University of Twente found that players who missed penalties activated their brain's pre-frontal cortex. This part of the brain is linked with long-term thinking and suggests players were overthinking the outcome of a miss. In comparison, players who perform well under pressure activated task-relevant areas of their brain. For example, increased activation of the motor cortex was related to performing under pressure. This seems logical, as movement is one of the most important elements when taking a penalty, Nattapong Thammasan, PhD, University of Twente. Researchers say that players could train themselves to activate beneficial regions of their brain in high-pressure moments.
